I Wasn't Ready. I Was Just Willing. How The Skills You've Always Had Might Be the Assets You're Underusing.

When is the last time you looked in the mirror and were shocked to recognize who you actually are? Yesterday was one of those turning points for me. This moment is one that I am lining in the sand. A moment to always remember. A coming into myself...

I believe as we continue to grow and stand in the higher versions of ourselves these moments will arise. This is the kind of moment worth naming publicly rather than letting it pass as another "good day."

I have been speaking since childhood.

I grew up in church with a microphone in my hand. Long before I understood what that meant I was speaking, leading and teaching. For years, I categorized this as "just a skill"; something I happened to be good at, useful in certain rooms, unnecessary outside of them.

Yesterday, reframed this entirely. I recognized, with a clarity I hadn't had before, that this ability was never just a skill. It was assigned. It carries a message, and the responsibility that comes with that is one that I am now stepping into deliberately rather than incidentally.

This is a pattern worth naming for anyone building something:

the gifts that feel most natural to us are often the ones we take the least seriously.

We file them under personality rather than purpose. We wait for permission, credentials, or polish before we treat them as real assets when in fact, the clearest signal of readiness is usually that we've already been doing the thing, quietly, for years. The shift isn't acquiring a new capability, it's recognizing the one you already have, and deciding to build on it intentionally instead of by accident.

A few questions worth sitting with, if you lead, build, or speak in any capacity:

  1. What is the thing you do so naturally that you've stopped noticing it's a strength?

  2. Where have you been operating in a gift without treating it as a strategic asset?

  3. What would change if you stopped waiting to feel "ready" and started building around what you already carry?

Fortunately, I write and coach on exactly this: helping people identify what they already have and recognizing it is what they're meant to do. If that's useful to your own thinking, I'd welcome you to my email list, where I share more on this, along with details on working with me directly.
