Who is seeing you? The balance of attention and alignment in life and business.
I paused mid-scroll yesterday because of a way a friend challenged me. I was sitting with a few friends when a life quote was dropped. My friend proclaimed:
“It’s not being seen. It’s being seen by the right people.”
We as leaders must sit with this.
The Question Underneath the Quote
We live in a culture obsessed with reach.
Views. Likes. Shares.
The algorithm has trained us to ask “how many people saw this?” as if visibility itself were the goal.
However, Dennis quote strips that down to something truer: being seen isn’t the win; being seen by the right people is.
So, I started asking myself a harder question — one I want to hand to you too:
When you are teaching, building, sharing, and working — who is actually seeing you?
Not who’s scrolling past or like it because they know you... Who’s seeing you? Who’s watching closely enough to understand what you’re building, why you’re building it, and what it costs you to keep going?
Not Everyone Watching Is Invited to Witness
Here’s what I’m learning: attention and alignment are not the same thing. You can have an audience full of eyes and still be unseen by the people who actually matter to your assignment.
The right people aren’t always the loudest ones in your comments.
Sometimes they’re quiet.
Sometimes there are only a few of them.
The ones who can carry what you’re building are more than just consumers they’re investors.
That investment is not always monetary. It is encouragement, joint effort and empowerment. It is dropping gems in natural ways so that we all grow together. That is investment and joint gain on the journey of growth and success.
This distinction must change everything about how you show up. This is the difference between performing for an audience and building in front of investors.
A Question Worth Sitting With:
So, this week, before you post, before you pitch, before you pour yourself into the next thing — pause and ask:
• Am I building for volume, or for the right eyes?
• Who has actually been paying attention to my growth, not just my highlight reel?
• If my audience shrank to only the people meant to walk with me, would I still feel built up?
Dennis didn’t know he was dropping a teaching moment. Amongst creatives that’s usually how the best wisdom arrives; fluidly. In casual conversation, you find someone who wasn’t trying to go viral just sharing what they’ve learned in their journey and it shifts your thinking.
Maybe that’s the real lesson; The right people aren’t chasing visibility… they’re just present.
When you find those people , you’ll know because they’ll be seeing you, not just watching you.
If this stirred something in you, I’d love to keep the conversation going. Join my email list for more reflections like this one, and if you’re ready to get clear on who you’re really building for, let’s talk coaching.
