Being a woman is difficult, being a Black Woman is even harder and being a Black Woman with a record is impossible. Sometimes I see we make ourselves pack away this truth. I get it, it would be hard to sit in that truth every day. I have a tendency to act as if having an education, a home, a career and safety that I have "made it". With further reflection I tend to withdraw that conclusion. This is why I was excited to go and see the movie "A Thousand and One" with Teyana Taylor because sometimes I need a reminder of how hard it is for me as a black woman. There are movies that make you sit back and reflect, this move definitely did that for me.
Teyana Taylor exemplifies the black woman who will do anything for her child. She gives tough love, time, laughter and makes the home as stable as she possibly can. The movie is so Nostalgic that you can essentially feel the 90's all over it. The story is of a young, black, single mother who is recently released from jail. She decides it would be better for her son to be with her than in the foster care system. You and I both know it is not as easy as that. Inez decides against her better judgement to take her son so that he can be with her.
Later Inez marries and you get to see the dynamic between a black stepfather and a black boy. Inez works hard and he grows up to be an exceptional kid. They slide so many various aspects of the black experience into the movie I could spend hours discussing it with you. They do this so well that at times this movie feels more like a History Documentary than anything else. I will also warn you that you'll come across some twists in the end of the movie that'll have you shook.

I highly recommend the movie for anyone, and I demand it for our black community. It deserves our energy and time.
If you go watch the movie, come back and let me know what you think.
