Bathsheba - The Wise Mama

Who would I be if I did not write about women during Women's History Month? As a woman myself I take pride in a month to reflect, acknowledge and encourage women.

King Solomon is known for being the "Wise King". He was the son of David and Bathsheba. There is scripture that states he asked God for this wisdom, and it was granted to him. It is also believed that King Solomon wrote the Proverbs. The Proverbs are considered to be a part of the "Wisdom Literature" Genre. So lets go to this Wisdom Literature.

Meet me in Proverb 31.

The text begins with this:

"The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him." (Proverb 31:1)

Did you catch that? An Inspired Utterance His MOTHER taught him.

King Solomon was a wise king because he asked God for wisdom but who God used to give him that wisdom is not known. I am sure there is wisdom he got from council, from his father's experiences and from God but in this Women's History Month lets discuss the wisdom of a mother. Read further to find what Bathsheba taught her son:

2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb! Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers! 3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.

4 It is not for kings, Lemuel— it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. 6 Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! 7 Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.

8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

In summary, there are a few things Bathsheba told her son:

Don't spend your energy on women.

Don't get drunk and forget your own decrees.

Let beer be for those who are in anguish.

Speak up for others and judge fairly.

I would like to encourage Mothers, God Mothers, Aunts, Grandmothers, Family Friends and Neighbors that God has placed us (women) on this Earth not just to bear the children, but to give them sound wisdom for their lives. We can be used by God to give children all that they need to survive this unpredictable world.

Happy Womens History Month

Love this! I never noticed it was words of wisdom from Bathsheba. It makes these proverbs so much more relatable as a mother of boys.
