I Am Free to Give Myself Grace

My cousin gave me this helpful reminder this morning and I forgot how necessary it is.

I have felt very productive this week; I made some great decisions, and I got things done. I wrote more, I worked out, I woke up earlier and I made a few beneficial financial decisions. Although I'd had a great week, when I woke up this morning, I was late, lethargic and foggy. I was feeling down and frustrated.

& then she texted, "give yourself grace". I loved it. I was like a "word hug". It allowed me to take a step back and breathe. I am in the midst of giving myself that grace but it's not easy. I am working on showing up more for myself, but I am also human, and I am not going to act like I show up the way I'd like every day.

You know what giving myself grace does? It allows me to move on.

"Give yourself Grace" doesn't mean forget the parameters you gave yourself; it means don't ruminate on what you didn't get done. Don't continue to beat yourself up about missing the mark but hold yourself accountable to doing it the next time.

It reminds me of golf. There are 18 holes on a regulation golf course. You'd have to make it through all 18 holes to complete the course. Giving yourself grace means not stressing over every hole. If you got stuck focused on one hole you'd never finished. If you did terrible on one-hole and got stuck focused on that mistake you'd be unable to go to the next hole. To give yourself grace would be to understand that you can move on and succeed throughout the rest of the course.

I would argue the same can be said for life. I have to breathe through what didn't go the way I may have expected and focus on the next task at hand.

So, this morning I had to take a deep breath and release my own personal frustrations.

Yes, I woke up late this morning but that doesn't negate my ability to be successful in the other things I am expecting of myself today.

Grace is favor or kindness shown without regard to the worth or merit of the one who receives it (Nelson's Bible Dictionary). Thank you, Starr, for reminding us to extend a little favor or kindness to ourselves because we won't always get it exactly right. When we extend Grace to ourselves, we not only recognize the Grace extended to us by God and others, but we learn how to extend Grace to others in need. Have a Good Godly Graceful Day; and let it begin with You!
