Let's Talk About It Family.
As a Christian and a Black Woman, the "I was quoting scripture" concept drew me in. I decided to read the article.
Please click below to do the same:
There is a coach that potentially used the Bible out of context by stating there is
"always a master and a servant.” to a black athlete while he is a white coach.
I was not there, and neither were you so we can't fully say what was meant by the statement; however, if what you said offended someone that should be the priority. Personally, I find issue when someone refuses to apologize and instead Bible beat us over our heads. I will offend someone one day and so will you because we're humans and that happens. What the proper response is, an empathetic heart. Only with the proper heart posture can I begin to question my own beliefs, and process how they affect others. I believe this should be accurate even more for Christians who are called to love all people.
Unfortunately, I read articles like this EVERYDAY. A black man being murdered, a black woman being treated unfairly for her hair, or a black child being bullied and let me just say it the best way I know how...
Ya Sister is Tiiieeed.
What I find is that we, no, let me say I, had allowed myself to believe that this racist, discriminatory, bigoted country has changed, and it has not. There are still many beliefs, hearts and mindsets that are totally against the acceptance of the black excellence that many of us know so well.
There is a statement I learned through a class that I have recently latched on to:
When we look at our current position from the basis of Slavery, we will fool ourselves to believe we have truly progressed. However, when we look at our current position from the basis of our African Foundation, we will find we are still very far from where we came from.
As African Americans in a place that is not our home it is our duty to begin the internal work, healing and education to understand the true wealth in our knowledge, history and passions.
As it pertains to this article, this is just another unhealthy mindset that has gotten caught in the crossfire. I am happy action was taken and I hope the coach will take a moment to reflect on how his statements can affect others.
For the rest of us, we can do the same. Meditate on your heart posture to those of other races as well as how this country views you. No matter your race there is change, healing and growth that is necessary!
