Unlocking Your Potential: The Critical Role of Mentorship in Personal and Professional Development

Updated: Sep 12

What is a mentor?

A mentor is someone who provides support, guidance, and direction to a "less experienced" mentee. Mentors can assist with life experiences, relationships, or career objectives. This is a committed relationship where both parties agree to undertake the necessary work for the mentee's advancement.

Agreement is crucial as it ensures that both parties are accountable for their commitment to the communication, effort, and follow-up needed to achieve change in any aspect of life.

I was blessed this year to be accepted to be mentored by Dalton and Patrice.

When I work on their coffee truck people ask "Is that your daughter? I say, "I basically am!".

During this period, they have become more like family to me. They have guided me in various aspects of life, including, honoring God, relationships, entrepreneurship, and parenting. They have challenged me, held me accountable, and pushed me forward in indescribable ways.

Qualities of an Exceptional Mentor:

  • An exceptional mentor shows empathy.

    • Regardless of the drama, confusion, or struggles I've shared with my mentors, they have never judged me, turned me away, or shown favoritism. (I often joke about making things dramatic. lol)

  • An exceptional mentor asks insightful questions.

    • Instead of telling me what to do, my mentors pose questions that help me arrive at my own conclusions.

  • An exceptional mentor provides a safe environment.

    • My mentors are privy to some of my deepest secrets, which is essential for them to guide me effectively. (It's wise to build trust with your mentor before sharing all your secrets!)

  • An exceptional mentor has the capacity to support.

    • During a recent mentoring session, I assured my mentors "not to worry" and that I would "figure it out on my own". Instead of letting me handle it alone, they reassured me that my intense emotions were valid and that they were there for me. This was healing for me; they confirmed that the right people can handle all aspects of me, and I don't need to hide!

If you haven't been blessed with a season of partnership through mentorship I highly recommend praying and asking God to send you a mentor. I have been blessed immensely through this journey.

A prayer for a mentor: Father, your word says in Proverb 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser. In this season of my life, I could use instruction so that I may be wise. Father, please provide me with a mentor to encourage me with wise words, direction and alignment with your plan for my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.

A prayer for a mentee: Father, your word says in Proverb 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Thank you for the honor of a chance to share the wise instruction I have learned through life with my mentee. Thank you for aligning me with a mentee, I pray our divine connection honors you with their life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
