World Mental Health Day 2022

ree

I was challenged to have a tough discussion with someone last week about my lack of knowledge of other cultures. I am honored to be a Black Woman and share in the struggle of other women in my ethnic group; however, this individual challenged my understanding of others who have had to struggle.

In my Corporate position I have an honor to work with partners from all over the Globe and this person asked how I could work effectively with others if I did not know their personal struggles. It was such a great question. It humbled me and challenged me to reflect on my personal knowledge. I had no objections; rather, I agreed that I needed to expand my knowledge of men and women from other cultural backgrounds.

I was enamored the next morning to find that the World Mental Health Organization's World Mental Health Day 2022 had a slogan in direct proportion to the conversation I'd recently had:

Campaign slogan

"Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority."

What I recognized is that I will be challenged in my ability to accurately support others in their journey to healing until I have made the intention to learn, accept and understand their culture, traditions and upbringing. Have you ever considered your ability to support, understand and uplift others from cultures, traditions and backgrounds that are different from yours? Whether we recognize it or not, our knowledge, empathy and interpretation of their culture will affect our ability to support them effectively.

By spending time pondering on my personal gaps in regard to various cultures I was faced with the tragedy in Thailand. I value that the World Mental Health Global initiative comes at that same time that this community is mourning a tragic event. We must consider their respective culture and traditions when it comes to their personal experience with a tragedy.

Fortunately, the topic of Mental Health has become much more prominent and should continue to be. Not only for the US but for the World as a whole. Praying for Thailand today as we reflect on Mental Health.
